Lewis was the 3rd and final plumber we worked with on the extensive renovation of our old (and listed) farmhouse - the other two vanished after a first visit! The job involved stripping out and replacing the entire plumbing and heating systems, including the boiler. It wasn't an easy install, but we've had few problems since and on the rare occasion that we have, Lewis has been there to put it right. I'm happy to recommend him!

Very pleased with the installation of air source heat pump. Lewis arrived and completed on the prearranged dates. His advice and planning the system prior to accepting the quote was far more comprehensive than prices from other firms. The plumber’s workmanship is top class with our home left clean and tidy on completion. Our 20year old oil boiler is now replaced with a very upmarket system which keeps the house at a constant temperature with loads of hot water for showers or bath. We highly recommend Lewis and his workmen and couldn’t be more pleased with their services.

Installation Requirements

Is Your Home Suitable For Ground Source and Air Source Heat Pump?

Considerations

For the heat pumps installation to meet MCS requirements the radiators will have to be sized correctly so they can give out enough heat. It is most likely you will have to replace them for slightly larger ones as heat pumps run at a cooler temperature than a conventional oil or gas boiler.

Benefits

Replacing your radiators when having any new heating system is highly recommended as modern radiators are a lot more efficient than older ones and old radiators can contain a lot of sludge and internal rust deposits.

Savings

Insulating your property is an effective way to make sure your heating bills stay low and will keep installation costs lower. Our heat pump installers make sure to provide you quality service in affordable rates.

Other Considerations

Solar panels are also a massive benefit to gaining the most out of one of our ground source heat pumps and are highly recommended.

Suitability

Is Your Home Suitable For A Ground Source Or Air Source Heat Pump?

Not every home is suitable to for ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps, and we will always give you honest advice before going ahead with a quotation as it may not be possible for the some of the following reasons – dated windows, lack of loft insulation, incoming power supply and no place to site the outdoor unit or internal setup. However the good news is most of these issues are rectifiable and we can offer advise on how to go about making your home more efficient and heat pump ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Air Source Heat Pumps

In brief, ASHPs function by moving air from one location to another. They collect heat from the air, channel it into a loop of refrigerant fluid, and then transfer it to a compressor, delivering warm air to you.

The pump is exceptionally clever and adept at channeling this heat through various pipes, whether it be multiple radiators throughout your home or underfloor heating. Furthermore, the ASHP isn’t solely for warming your home; in the warmer months, the pump captures indoor heat and releases it outside, ensuring cooler summer months and cosier winter nights.

A smaller internal space is needed for an ASHP. While external space remains necessary, opting for this solution could be advantageous if interior space is limited. No groundwork or external collector pipework is needed, making an ASHP potentially more cost-effective than a Ground Source Heat Pump.

It serves as a budget-friendly option for home heating, and with access to government grants, it can become even more economical. Additionally, an ASHP boasts an impressive lifespan and can be utilised for both heating and cooling your home—an efficient use of natural energy to power your living space.

To ensure optimal functioning of an ASHP, it’s essential to have a well-insulated home in advance. This includes features such as underfloor heating or adequately insulated loft spaces and walls. It’s worth noting that there may be a slight noise associated with the operation of an ASHP.

Installing the ASHP is significantly more straightforward compared to the Ground Source Heat Pump, as it doesn’t necessitate any excavation. This makes the installation process notably simpler and often faster than that of the GSHP.

Initially, it’s imperative for your home to possess effective insulation. ASHPs generally provide a lower heat supply compared to boilers, making a well-insulated home particularly conducive to their efficiency.

Smaller properties are well-suited for this pump, though provision for the external unit is necessary. In larger properties, multiple external units can be installed, but this choice will inevitably impact the overall costs involved.

In contrast to a gas or electric heating system, an ASHP presents a renewable option for warming your home. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also provides an opportunity to economise on your utility expenses.

The costs associated with installing air source heat pumps (ASHPs) in the UK can vary based on several factors, including the size of the system, the level of insulation in your home, and the specific requirements of the installation.

  1. Installation Cost: The installation cost for an ASHP typically starts at £6,000. This cost includes the price of the heat pump unit. However, labour costs will vary as will the cost of any additional materials needed.

  2. Running Costs: ASHPs are generally considered more energy-efficient than traditional heating systems, which can lead to lower running costs over time. The actual savings will depend on factors such as the efficiency of the system, the size of your home, and local energy prices.

  3. Additional Costs: Depending on your home’s requirements, there may be additional costs for improvements such as insulation upgrades or radiator replacements to optimise the efficiency of the ASHP.
